Carbs, In the Kitchen, With the Spoon

Carbs, in the kitchen, with the spoon = Death of Michelle (CLUE anyone?)

Last night I was going to write you a wonderful blog about my food and something that hit me about me and carbs. However, I had a bit of a traumatic event happen last night, where I had to respond to someone. It made me think and it reminded me that we are all VERY precious.

However, I wanted to write about my little insight into food that I had yesterday.

Brekky: 1/2 c. white rice, 1/2 c. quinoa, 1 c. veggies, 2 eggs.

I was stuffed, uncomfortably and then get REALLY sleepy.

Lunch: 1/2 c. of chickpea salad w/ olives and salad and 1 egg white.

I felt ok after that. However, I was snacky and the sugar monster is having a hard time dying—I haven’t had a good dose of sugar since last Wednesday’s binge πŸ™‚

Snack 1: 3 TB of nuts

Snack 2: 3/4 c. white rice, 2 egg whites, 1/8 c. of nuts and cinnamon.

About 15 minute afters eating that I literally had my eyes glazing over, in a food coma. To me it’s amazing how much impact the white rice had on me. I had never noticed it before..well actually I have. I never feel good after eating any pasta really. Cereal NEVER keeps me full. Me and simple carbs aren’t friends.

Snack 3: 1 unpictured orange and 1 juice: 2 celery, 1 huge handful of spinach, 1 garlic clove, 1 orange, 1/3 cucumber.

I felt SO much better.

Dinner: 1 salad w/ left over pulp from the juice w/ about 2 1/2 c. of grapes.

Then a snacked on a little bit of crap. I was at a picnic.

I had about 10 rice crackers, 1 small piece of bread, 1 TB of cashew based dip and about 15 potato chips. Not that bad. It could have been A LOT WORSE. I normally would have taken soda with me, but I got sparkling water instead.

I can feel it this morning.

It’s interesting how the carbs made me crash. It makes a lot of sense to me and how I would fall apart physically in the afternoons many times at work. I could function sometimes and was incredibly dependent upon Diet Coke and coffee to get me through. The interesting thing for me, is that when I crash, I go STRAIGHT back to food to give me a ‘pick up’. So I just keep eating. Just keep overloading my body.

I am learning.

What has really helped is monitoring what I eat, being really aware of stripping back things and now have a much more in-tune approach to my body. I am NOT beating myself up for yesterday. My tummy is bloated (to be expected) but I am not upset at myself. I didn’t binge. I went a little off the rails with my fruit intake, but I didn’t eat the brownies, chocolate cake, crackers and cheese, or champagne. It just didn’t even cross my mind.

Even though I was in a self-induced carb coma, I consider yesterday a success πŸ™‚

What foods don’t work for you?

It’s interesting when you have that AHA moment – suddenly every other experience you’ve had makes sense and seems to be so obvious. Every day is a learning experience.

Whew, yesterday was a carbolicious day for me, too. I know that carb coma feeling and it ain’t pretty.

So glad you’re learning about your body and kudos for not giving in to all the other picnic goodies!

Carbs are like crack. Esp. those which are simple. I must stay away. I hate how I feel after them. But man they taste good.

  3. love2eatinpa says:

yup, good old carbs, once you start, you keep going back for more. sucks!
it’s sounds like in the big picture you made good decisions and that is really what counts. one picnic is not going to make or break you. put it behind you and move on (as you have already done!)

    • Mish says:

The most empowering thing ever is to go ‘well, that wasn’t a good choice…now I am moving on’. I have prayed for this day for so long. It’s slowly coming.

Your food pictures look reeeaally good, I’m drooling πŸ™‚

How do carbs make me feel? Guilty, which is not the right answer, I know. In the low-carb craze a few years ago it left me feeling like carbs are a no-no. But I do know that good carbs are good for me!

Glad you had your AHA moment, like the others said, you live & you learn

I was just thinking the same exact thing tonight about carbs. My healthy, raw, green soup for lunch totally bonked, so I ended up eating rosemary white bread with hummus for lunch. Tasty, but I went from being energetic to crashing hard. I realized it’s always that way with simple sugars like white bread, sugary sweets, etc. Hmmm. Time to adjust what I put in my body! πŸ™‚ That’s what I healthy lifestyle is all about that – constantly evolving and changing to become the best and healthiest you you can be. I’m way healthier now than I was 6 months ago, and I’m sure in another 6-12 months I’ll be even healthier! πŸ™‚

I think what you said that you are heathier than you were 6 months ago and you’ll be even more healthy in 6-12 months is SUCH an important frame of mind. Good on you for recognising that.

It’s interesting when you suddenly realize the negative (or positive!) impact certain foods have on you. When I cut meat out of my diet, I almost immediately noticed an increased level of energy and a general feeling of well-being that hadn’t been there before.

    I am so like you.
Any processed white (even if its not sweet like the white rice or say CEREAL) triggers me to craaaave sugars and simply feel lethargic.

    ENTIRELY.

Makes me long for the couch πŸ™‚

It’s so true. I want to curl up in a ball and sleep my way through the day..wake up and eat more carbs. They are not helpful for me.

  8. christie @ honoring health says:

I am the same way about carbs. I can tolerate them about once per day and be OK but anymore than that and it is all downhill. I even notice it if I eat too many beans which is totally crazy sounds but it is true. I am working on one week yeast and sugar free and feel better most days but on the days after I overdo the carbs, I have a carb hangover and a bloated stomach. 😦

It’s awesome that you are so in tune with your body that you recognize those things! Actually the one thing that makes me feel terrible are eggs. I feel sick and hungry and wierd after I eat them….

  10. Tracey @ Tropical Happiness says:

I think that it’s fabulous that you are listening to your body and REALLY figuring out what works and doesn’t, instead of just trying the same thing over and over without thinking about it. You’re doing great in your journey!

    Hello Mish,
This is my first reply to your great blog! I wanted to let you know that you inspired me to walk during lunch yesterday. One step at a time…one small goal.

I have HUGE problems with carbs, too. I never felt better than when I first discovered Atkins – my energy went through the roof. I lost weight and the yukky, bloated feeling that I had every night after dinner. I still stuggle, but tend toward whole grains in limited quantities.

Also, I LOVE your photos! Do you mind if I ask what kind of camera you have?

Keep up the good work. I’ ve added your page to my favorites!

    Vicki

That’s awesome. I always have a 10 minute rule. Give it ten minutes. Which is what you’re going. I suggest that you keep a ‘success journal’ and write down these little victories πŸ™‚

Carbs also don’t work for me. But if I’m working out and moving my body, I need carbs. Mish, the Philippines would be the death of you. Carbs everywhere! Not to mention we eat white rice during every meal.
